Working for Postmates

Compared to all other food delivery services like Uber EATS and Doordash, Postmates stands near the top because they do not limit delivery to food.

As a courier, you may find yourself delivering practically anything. The only real restrictions on package deliveries are those that are similar to your local post offices, such as rules on tobacco and alcohol.

A typical day for a Postmates courier starts with turning on the app when they are ready to start delivering. Once the app is on, delivery requests will show up on the driver’s smartphone.

After reviewing the order, drivers have the choice as to accept the delivery. If they do, the app will display the fastest route to the pick-up location.

Upon arriving, drivers will need to figure out if a package or order was paid for. Postmates has a great help center for drivers that covers everything you need to know about accepting and completing deliveries.

If the order has already been paid for at the restaurant or store, the process is simple.

  • Tap Order Details and review the order to make sure it is correct
  • Contact customer if substitute items are needed
  • Take a clear photo of the receipt

Sometimes delivery drivers are required to place and pay for the order. This happens when the store or restaurant does not accept payments directly from Postmates.

When this happens, drivers have to place the order (if at a restaurant) or find the items themselves (if at a store). Once you’ve placed the order and are ready to checkout, couriers pay for the order using a prepaid card provided by Postmates.

Here’s a detailed look at the process of placing and paying for an order as a Postmates driver:

  • Review Order Details and place the order
  • If at a store, like a grocery store, find the items and head to the checkout counter
  • Use the Postmates prepaid card to pay
  • Take a clear photo of the receipt

Once the order or package is ready to be delivered, couriers have officially entered the homestretch when they tap Start Drop Off. This will make the app show the fastest route to get to the customer’s destination.

Upon arrival, couriers look for any special directions on how the customer wants to receive their package. Drivers should confirm that they are delivering to the right person by asking for the waiting person’s name and order details.

After the hand-off, couriers can select either Delivery Unconfirmed or Delivered to Customer.

When Postmates receives this information, drivers are sent to a different page where they can confirm that the delivery is complete and how much they earned for accomplishing this task.

For those who have Auto Accept on, the next delivery will be queued up. If you are using this feature, be sure to turn it off prior to accepting the next delivery to assure that you can finish working on your time.

How to Become a Postmates Driver

Personal information, such as email address, name, home address, and phone number will be required. In addition to these details, you will need to disclose what type of smartphone you have and your vehicle info.

Related: Make More Money With A Postmates Driver Referral Code

From there, potential new drivers need to accept the Fleet Agreement, consent to a background check, load a nice profile pic, and set up a direct deposit system.

Once all of this information is ready to go, couriers will receive a welcome kit. Contained within will be the Postmates Prepaid Card and additional info.

At this point, drivers can download the Fleet App and start making deliveries! Congratulations, you are no a member of the Postmates fleets.

If you are prepared to complete this process and want to maximize your potential earnings, use a referral code. This can be entered in when you are providing Postmates with your personal information.

Drivers who use a referral code can earn a couple hundred dollars just for signing up. This amount will vary based on your location.

As with any business, there are some rules and regulations set in place for the hiring process. So, double check that you meet the following Postmates requirements if you are interested in driving for the service.

Postmates Driver Requirements

  • Must be 18 years or older
  • Have an iPhone or Android smartphone
  • Possess a Valid US Driver’s license
  • Need an Insurance Policy
  • Pass a background check
  • Clean driving record
  • Pass an orientation interview

Postmates Vehicle Requirements

  • Vehicle that works
  • Scooters Accepted
  • Motorcycles Accepted
  • Bike delivery is allowed in some areas

How Much do Postmates Drivers Make?

Depending on where you are located, the answer to how much Postmates drivers earn will vary. Especially when you factor in the tips customers give to Postmates couriers.

Nevertheless, here is how Postmates breaks down a couriers payment in regards to each step of the delivery process.

  • Earnings for each completed pick up
  • Paid for each delivery dropped off
  • A monetary amount for each minute that is spent at the pickup location
  • Payment for every mile traveled between the pickup and drop-off location
  • Any bonus multiplier that is added in, such as the Blitz bonuses

Blitz bonuses are set in place as a way to reward drivers for making deliveries during rush hour and high-demand timeframes. At one point in time, Postmates simply showed how much the multiplier, let’s say x1.75, was at any given time. This caused a lot of confusion.

To eliminate this unnecessary stress, Postmates started including the Blitz pricing within the final earnings page, which makes it much easier to figure out if making a delivery is worth your time.

On top of these earning categories, couriers are frequently tipped by Postmates customers and drivers are able to keep 100% of them. Savvy couriers that practice excellent customer service can increase their base pay each week with ease.

Postmates processes each driver’s pay within 4-7 business days of an order’s completion. Days that are considered to be business are Monday-Friday.

Drivers that need access to their earnings faster than this payout schedule can us Fast Pay. Fast Pay makes it possible for drivers to withdraw cash for a small fee.

Tips to Increase Postmates Driver Earnings

There are numerous ways to maximize your weekly Postmates paycheck. One of the best ways to achieve this is by getting bigger tips. Now, let’s be honest, people do not always tip.

To increase the odds of them tipping and the amount that is given, we recommend practicing excellent customer service. You’ll be amazed how much extra cash you can bring in just by wearing a smile.

For example, when you get the receipt from the vendor, write your name, a smiley face, and a nice message like “Thank You”. Or confirm that if the order is food related there are straws and condiments in the bag.

If you are able to make the exchange face-to-face, be sure to give the customer their receipt. Follow up this move by suggesting that they keep it just in case something goes wrong. Completing these nice gestures really start to add up throughout the delivery and more times than not customers will happily tip.

Other than tipping, Postmates provides several good options to increase earnings each week. For example, there is a built-in feature in the app called Auto Accept.

Drivers that turn this method on are able to accept all incoming orders without getting overwhelmed or experiencing any downtime.

Another great way to make more with Postmates is to take advantage of a driver referral code when you sign up. Unfortunately, if you are already a delivery driver, you’re out of luck.

Drivers can also stack deliveries. To accomplish this, drivers organize their deliveries based on a specific set of vendors.

If done correctly, couriers can accept more than one order from a vendor and stack up multiple deliveries in one go. This can generate more opportunities for tips and increase productivity.

To assure that you are able to accept a plethora of orders during your working hours, consider driving during peak hours. Typically they occur during rush hour, lunch hour, and during local events. Furthermore, drivers can also place themselves in the right place at the right time.

Dubbed “hot spots”, there are locations within every city that see more order action than others. Usually, a “hot spot” is near a popular restaurant, grocery store, food chain, or other business offering goods.

Drivers that are in these more popular locations have a better chance of picking up orders as they are generated. Plus, by being near the pickup location, drivers can reduce the wait time between orders which makes it easier to rack up a bunch of deliveries in an hour.

Finally, Postmates can earn a huge stack of money in a passive way at sign up. To achieve this, simply use a driver referral code when you sign up.

Depending on your location, you may be able to add an extra 0 to your next Postmates paycheck.

Frequently Asked Questions

Although the package delivery service is fairly straightforward, there are a few minor details to consider before becoming a courier. The most popular topics are listed below.

Does Postmates pay for gas?

Drivers are responsible for all business-related expenses, including gas.

Paying for these issues out of pocket may be a bit annoying, however, there is a bright side. All of the business-related expenses you pay for while working as a Postmates courier are tax deductible, allowing you to lower your tax liability.

Which means that expenses, such as parking tickets, gas, and even car maintenance can be deducted from income for tax purposes.

Does Postmates pay an hourly wage?

Unlike some of their competitors, Postmates does not provide an hourly salary or a guarantee. Instead, Postmates pays per delivery.

Each part of the delivery process pays a certain amount for completion. This includes pickup, wait time for order completion, travel to the final destination, and drop off.

What about taxes?

Being your own boss has a lot of perks. Namely, you call the shots. The trade-off for this is keeping track of business operations as an independent contractor.

As in, the money you earn does not have taxes taken out yet. Due to this, drivers are required to save a portion of their earnings to pay for taxes. In general, we recommend saving at least 30% of your profits.

What Postmates Drivers Say

Postmates couriers have reported earning about an hour on average. Even if this is off by in some areas, the final payout proves that Postmates is a very profitable gig.

Apparently, the best way to ensure that your hourly wage remains this high is by stacking deliveries, auto-accepting orders, and sticking close to hot spots.

One of the number one complaints about working for Postmates is that many drivers have noticed that they spend a good portion of their time waiting at the restaurant. Usually, this happens due to the establishment waiting for the driver to get there before making the food.

Other than this dilemma, if you are looking for an easy and profitable gig, driving for Postmates is the idle side-hustle position.

Postmates Driver Pay

silver iphone x displaying Postmates instant deposit screen

Throughout this article, we’ve mentioned a few times how it’s possible to earn up to per hour working as a Postmates driver.

There’s a number of factors that go into determining how much you are able to earn while you work, including your miles traveled, time spent waiting to pick up orders, and how many orders you are able to complete per hour.

That doesn’t even begin to take into consideration your potential earnings from tips.

Postmates Salary

If you’re going into this position hoping to earn a competitive salary or have a generous stock option plan, then you should temper your expectations.

Postmates does not offer salaried driver positions of any kind.

Working as a fleet driver, you will be considered an independent contractor.

You will be paid solely for the deliveries that you make, and any fees that you incur while making them (parking tickets and fees, moving violation tickets, ATM fees, etc.) are your responsibility.

So How Does Postmates Pay Drivers?

Postmates pays all of their drivers through direct deposit.

When you are first creating your driver account, you will be asked to provide your banking information to sign up for direct deposit.

All earnings, including tips, are typically transferred to your bank account within four to seven days after completing the delivery.

The amount that you are paid per order will vary based on the city that you are located in.

Postmates provides detailed information and pay rates for all of the markets they currently operate in through the Fleet Support page.

Postmates earnings per order are calculated using the following criteria:

  • An amount for each completed pickup
  • An amount for each completed drop off
  • A per minute rate for your time spent waiting at a pickup location
  • A per mile rate for the distance traveled between pickup and drop off locations
  • During peak business hours, there may also be a blitz (or surge) bonus shown when you accept a delivery offer

Keeping the above criteria in mind, let’s see how that works by using the city of Las Vegas for an example.

You can see their market information by clicking

here

. Their pay formula is as follows:

  • .90 for each completed pickup
  • .90 for each completed drop off
  • .10 per minute spent waiting at the pickup location
  • .55 per mile spent traveling between pickup and drop off locations

There will always be a minimum base payout of per route as well, excluding tips and bonuses.

Do Postmates Drivers Earn Tips?

One of the best ways to increase your earnings as a Postmates driver is by providing fast and friendly service every time in order to increase your potential tips.

After you complete every delivery, the customer will receive a notification asking them to provide you with feedback and to leave an optional tip.

You will keep 100 percent of any tips that you receive.

This can end up increasing your earnings by quite a substantial amount, making it vital to always strive to offer the best customer experience that you can.

Other Methods to Increase Your Earnings

If you’re interested in increasing your earnings with Postmates even further, there are a few things that you can take to help out significantly.

Here’s a list of some ideas to help you earn even more money:

  • Stack your deliveries by accepting more than one at a time — however, Postmates enforces the requirement that you must complete the deliveries in the order they are accepted, so keep that in mind
  • You can opt in to an “Auto-Accept” feature through your Fleet app, allowing new deliveries to be added to your route automatically — this can help maximize your profits
  • Work during peak times (every day from 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. and 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.) and keep your eye out for Blitz pricing opportunities. If Blitz pricing is in place, then the delivery fee is multiplied, vastly increasing your earning potential
  • Check your map in the Fleet app for the dark red locations — these are known as “Hot Spots” (the darker the red spot, the busier the area) where you will have a much higher chance of receiving a delivery offer

Postmates also offers a variety of perks and incentives for drivers who perform their job well and provide excellent customer service.

Drivers who complete over 25 deliveries in a month are given a free Postmates Unlimited subscription.

Complete 10 or more deliveries in a given week and you will be eligible for PerkSpot the following week, granting access to benefits from both local and national shops.

The company also offers other types of bonuses and incentives, which they will notify their drivers of through email, SMS, or the Fleet app.

Reviews for Postmates Drivers

As we mentioned previously, after you complete each delivery, customers will be notified through their app to leave a review for you.

Maintaining a solid Postmates review score is vital if you want to be successful as a Postmate, since the company does not tolerate bad customer service.

If your overall driver score falls too low, you risk having your account suspended.

You can consult the market information page through Fleet Support to see the minimum required feedback score for your specific city.

By striving to offer a 5-star experience with every delivery, you can maximize your potential earnings from tips by making your customers happy.

Here are a few tips on how you can keep your rating as high as possible:

  • Be polite and courteous when dealing with customers — a friendly “Hi, I’m your Postmate” and a sincere “Thank you” can go a long way towards earning a tip
  • Call or text the customer to inform them if any issues come up (if an item is unavailable and a substitution is needed, order delays, etc.)
  • Keep presentation in mind when dealing with customers — leave items in the hot/cold bag as needed until they’re ready for customers
  • Try and complete your deliveries as quickly as possible to keep customers happy and maximize your earning potential
  • Triple check the shopping list every time in order to ensure order accuracy

By keeping the above points in mind, you can easily provide an outstanding customer experience every time and ensure that your feedback remains high, increasing the likelihood of receiving tips for your efforts.

23-07-2021

At the end of 2020, Uber completed the acquisition of Postmates. At the time, the Uber Eats and the Postmates apps were running separately as they had done previously, but it was recently announced that the Postmates Fleet app (the app specific to drivers) is going offline for good.

While it’s not surprising that the Postmates Fleet app is going away, drivers still have questions on what the transition will look like and what they have to do (if anything).

instacart

The part that is going to affect drivers the most is the simple fact that the Postmates Fleet app is disappearing and will not be usable moving forward. In some markets, it will be gone by as early as August 8.

If you go on the Postmates Fleet website right now, they do not allow you to sign up to drive for Postmates anymore. Instead, you’re redirected to the Uber Eats delivery sign up page.

It was surprising to me that there wasn’t more information listed on Postmates’s website about the transition and what to expect.

Any link about signing up to drive redirects to Uber while the rest of the site offers no insight into the changes coming.

What to do as a Postmates Driver

One thing to be aware of is that you will need to pass an Uber Eats background check, even if you’ve recently passed your background check with Postmates.

Because Uber Eats has stricter guidelines and measures in place, you might not get approved to deliver for their app when you easily could on Postmates.

If you don’t get the job due to misinformation or incorrect info on your background check, we recommend talking to Larry Smith who specializes in unfair deactivations due to background check issues.

To make the transition as easy as possible, you’ll want to link your Postmates account to your Uber account. If you don’t have an Uber account yet, create one here. All of your Postmates information should migrate over to your Uber account.

There may be cases where you can no longer access your Postmates account because of the merge. As of July 7, 2021, customers and delivery requests were transitioned off of the Postmates Fleet and over to the Uber app. If you are having trouble, contact Postmates support here.

If you have other questions concerning the transition, try finding answers on Uber’s FAQs about Postmates.

If you don’t make the transition and link your accounts, then you will have to create an Uber account anyway in order to continue delivering. To learn how to sign up and use the Uber Eats app, check out this video: Uber EATS Delivery App Tutorial for 2021 (Step by Step)

How Will Postmates Drivers be Paid?

The payment structure of Uber Eats is very similar to Postmates. You’ll get a weekly deposit, or you have the option to cash out your earnings for instant payments. Instant payouts come with a

.50 fee per transaction unless you have the Uber debit card where the fee is waived.

Pay periods run from Monday at 4am to Monday at 4am. The direct deposit will typically end up in your account around that Thursday but may vary by a day or two depending on your bank.

If you have any remaining funds in Postmates, the recommendation is to cash out before transitioning to Uber Eats just in case something goes wrong.

You’ll get paid out via the Uber app, so make sure your deposit information is correct before earning money on the platform.

Tips for Earning on Uber Eats

If you’re an experienced courier transitioning from Postmates to Uber Eats, you likely know everything you need to. The overall experience shouldn’t vary too greatly.

However, here are some tips from our experts:

1. Have a delivery bag

Seems like an obvious one, but the ones provided by Postmates and other delivery apps are fairly small and likely won’t cover your bases.

Elijah recommends this bag from Amazon because it is very versatile and will have you covered. He also recommends getting a pizza bag specifically because the average food bag will not accommodate the average pizza.

2. Use Waze for navigation

Uber’s navigation is not ideal, though they have recently announced some improvements. The Waze app is updated by users like you for real-time updates such as traffic, accidents and road closures.

You can also “favorite” your locations so you can navigate to locations known to be active for you as an Uber Eats delivery driver.

Our full breakdown of Waze vs Google Maps here.

3. Know what orders to accept

Learn what your market has to offer as far as earning power goes and choose only requests that are worth your time and effort.

Base your estimate on the info in front of you, not on the speculation of earning a higher tip after the fact. Take miles and time into your equation before accepting.

4. Track your mileage

This is something that will come in handy at the end of the year when it’s time for taxes. While Uber will track your mileage while you’re actively delivering, there are more miles that you can deduct from your taxes.

When you’re positioning yourself to accept deliveries, for example, those miles may be offline or not while you’re actively delivering, but they are miles for your business and can be written off. Make sure to track all of your miles that are business-related.

In most cases, Postmates couriers’ transition to Uber Eats should be fairly seamless. If you’ve been delivering for Postmates, you’ll find all the same restaurants and requests as you found on Postmates – just more of them!

Drivers, have you made the switch from Postmates to Uber Eats? How did it go?

16-01-2022 · Other food delivery apps like DoorDash and Grubhub offer phone support, but Postmates always failed to deliver in this area for its drivers. In the past, Postmates used a merchant phone number at 888-815-7726. It was the number its retailers could use to get help. That number no longer works due to the merger between Postmates and Uber.

You can expect to experience some bumps in the road when it comes to your deliveries as you go about your business driving for the Postmates food delivery app.

The good news is that there are ways to get help from Postmates Fleet support or Uber Eats customer service if you need assistance while making a delivery.

You need to pay close attention to the Uber Eats customer service options because Postmates is now a part of the Uber food delivery service.

In this article, you’ll learn how to get help while driving for Postmates or Uber Eats so you never feel alone while you’re out there on the road.

Ways to Get Postmates Fleet Support

You need to know how to get help while delivering for Postmates.

Many Postmates drivers wonder if a phone number is available to call when they need support.

1. Phone Number

Here is the information you need regarding the Postmates Fleet Support phone number.

2. Email

Although Uber Eats took over Postmates, there are reports that the Postmates app still works in some parts of the country.

No one knows how long this will continue.

If you’re a Postmates Fleet driver who can still deliver on the old app, you can get help via email support.

How do I Email Postmates Customer Service?

To get email support, try emailing the company at [email protected].

If that doesn’t work, you can email Uber Eats support at [email protected].

Use these email options regarding any issue while delivering food on the Postmates and Uber Eats apps.

Due to the high volume of messages that get sent to customer service, there’s no guarantee you’ll hear back from anyone.

If you don’t get a response immediately, try emailing again.

3. Online Hub

You can get help using the online hub option.

To use it, look for the support tab inside the Postmates app.

Tap on it and make your request.

If you’re a Postmates driver who’s already gone through the switch to the Uber Eats app, you can use the same option from within the Uber driver app.

Look for the menu icon from within your Uber app and click on “help”.

You’ll see a vast array of issues that drivers typically run into.

Find your issue and submit your question.

Some issues within the Uber driver app qualify for phone support.

If your issue qualifies for a phone representative’s help, click on “Call Support” and the app will connect you with a phone rep.

4. Social Media

You can also try reaching out to Postmates on Twitter or Facebook.

Postmates’ Twitter handle is @Postmates and its Facebook page is facebook.com/postmates/.

You may have better luck getting a response from someone through these social media channels.

However, you should note that Postmates doesn’t have a designated customer service Twitter or Facebook account like Uber Eats does.

It means your inquiry may go unanswered if you reach out to Postmates in this way.

How Do I Get a Human at Postmates?

Now that Uber took over the Postmates company, you can get a human by using the phone option we described above.

Open the Uber Eats app and look for your issue.

If your problem qualifies as a phone support issue, you can tap the phone option and talk to a customer service person.

Troubleshooting: Postmates Fleet Account Suspended

Have you tried logging into your Postmates app, only to find a message telling you about a Postmates Fleet account suspension?

Here’s what to do about it.

What Happened to my Postmates Fleet Account?

If you can’t log into your Postmates account, you’ve likely already been suspended.

These are common reasons for getting an account suspension.

  • You didn’t complete a few deliveries
  • Your rating reached a below-average number
  • You had too many cancellations or no-shows

How do I Unsuspend my Postmates Fleet Account?

To unsuspend your Postmates Fleet account, contact support by tapping on the help tab in the app and selecting “Contact Support”.

Choose “I need to talk to someone about my account.”

From there, tap on “My account suspension.”

You’ll then get an option to chat through the app with a customer service representative.

Can I Reapply for Postmates if My Account was Suspended?

Unfortunately, you won’t be able to reapply for Postmates after a suspension unless the company allows it.

Postmates doesn’t offer an official reapplication or appeals process.

Your only recourse is to make contact with support and ask them how you can achieve reactivation.

Do your best to explain the situation and see if they’ll give you some leniency.

Customer support will eventually provide you with a final answer about whether they’ll let you back on the Postmates team.

If you do get accepted back on the food delivery app, there are a few things you can do to improve your chances of staying in good standing.

  • Comply with the cancellation and no-show policy
  • Don’t let your rating fall below average
  • Be more active on deliveries

Beware: Postmates Scams

Did you know that some Postmates scams exist?

It’s a good idea to become familiar with them so you don’t ever get taken in by unscrupulous people.

What are Postmates Scams?

Postmates scams happen when someone tries to take advantage of your need to earn money.

These fraudsters might pretend to be Postmates employees and trick you into exposing sensitive banking or log-in details.

For example, be careful if someone contacts you claiming that he or she is part of the hiring team at Postmates.

They may say they need an upfront payment before activating your account.

Hang up on this person immediately.

You’re talking to a scammer trying to get cash out of you.

You also need to remain aware of phishing scams where fraudsters try to gain access to your Postmates account.

Once inside, they’ll drain your earnings into their bank accounts.

Why are Drivers Vulnerable to Postmates Scams?

Drivers usually fall victim to Postmates scams because they don’t do their due diligence or they get scared that Postmates is about to deactivate their account.

To protect yourself, you should follow these guidelines.

  • Protect your bank account and personal information with two-factor authentication (you can use Google Authenticator or Authy).
  • Never provide anyone (including a Postmate employee) with sensitive login details like PINs or passwords.
  • Remain cautious at all times. Ask questions if someone asks for any personal information over the phone.

Remember that Postmates makes it difficult to get one of their representatives on the phone when you need help out on the road.

In the first place, it’s unlikely that they’re going to call you.

If they do call you, it’s even more unlikely for them to ask you for information they should already see as they look through your driver account.

Pro Tip

Look out for the Uber code text scam sweeping the nation.

There are countless people falling victim to this scam, costing them time, money, and headache.
